Designed to be the new hub of its main campus in Cedar Rapids, Kirkwood’s renovated and expanded student center is a place for students to relax, collaborate, study, meet and gather. A multi-functional space, the center’s new walkways in need of beautiful, functional lighting were the perfect match for the Flindt Collection from Louis Poulsen by NEO Architectural Lighting.
Services previously spread across the campus are now able to be under the same roof for all 12,000 students and 1,700+ employees. The center holds the campus’ main dining center, study areas, meeting rooms, inclusive spaces for cultural groups, an art gallery, a café, and a stage for live music as well as a variety of counseling and advising resources. By providing a modern one-stop shop for all student services on campus, Kirkwood hopes the new student center will positively impact student involvement and ultimately drive academic success among the colleges’ student body.
Due to the volume of people served by the center, the outdoor spaces need adequate illumination to help safely guide the way around the area. The exterior lighting scheme designed by Design Engineers utilizes several Flindt series fixtures. These outdoor rated sconces, bollards and pedestrian scale poles designed by Christian Flindt complement both modern and classic spaces, meeting the campus’ needs in a highly stylish manner.
Emitting light from an asymmetric carving that also serves as a dimming reflector, these fixtures provide a wide light distribution spanning nearly 180 degrees, delivering safe, glare free illumination. With a subtle understated daytime appearance paired with an attractive glow in the dark of night, the Flindt series is quickly becoming a modern classic, suiting spaces like this wonderfully.
